Well, so you managed to install Ubuntu on your machine. There are few things you will need to do before it becomes a usefull internet/media mean machine.
Due to certain restrictions of closed source software and other legal reasons etc. certain things cannot be included in the Ubuntu installation. If you like playing all sorts of media content on you pc you will probably need to install number of things.

There is a lot of guides in a lot of places explaining how to start with Ubuntu and how to get things working. There is no point in re-discovering the wheel but I thought I'll attempt to write about everything I needed to switch from Windows XP to Ubuntu.

Well, you might seen it or not. But things that linux can do these days are eye candy beyond windows vista and so much further. And the bonus? Tou don't need the latest and greatest PC witch a huge grafix card.
