Welcome to robdian.co.uk!

At the moment, my favourite interests are open source software and photography. This page is going to be a mix of the two.

I'm also getting my hands dirty with some open source content management website systems. My last project is patients-online.org. Read more...

Well, so you managed to install Ubuntu on your machine. There are few things you will need to do before it becomes a usefull internet/media mean machine.

Due to certain restrictions of closed source software and other legal reasons etc. certain things cannot be included in the Ubuntu installation. If you like playing all sorts of media content on you pc you will probably need to install number of things.

First thing I install on my fresh Ubuntu is all the media stuff so I can watch videos, listen to music etc. Learn how to install things here.

Since Ubuntu Feisty release things are getting much simpler.

To get all the media stuff working you have 2 main options. Install it manually or get an automatic script that will do it for you.

If you choose to do it using automatic script you can use Automatix. Automatix is having a lot of negative publicity lately. I think in Ubuntu Feisty its easy enough to install everything without using Automatix.

It is not very difficult to install things yourself. All you have to do is follow this guide on ubuntu wiki.

I also created my own script (some things were borrowed from BUMPS) which is ment to install things I like on a new edgy installation. I have tested it on a new edgy install but its here with no warranty. Here it is DOWLOAD media_script0.3.tar.gz. I'm putting it here mainly so you can have a look at the script, change it to suit you or do whathever.

I usualy use Ubuntu Guide to find out how and what to install.
To find the most up to date guide for restricted formats see restricted formats on ubuntu wiki.

Check out the Ubuntu Guide and restricted formats on Ubuntu wiki.
