Welcome to robdian.co.uk!

At the moment, my favourite interests are open source software and photography. This page is going to be a mix of the two.

I'm also getting my hands dirty with some open source content management website systems. My last project is patients-online.org. Read more...

Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 is now out. This is official method of how to upgrade to Feisty.

The best way to upgrade any version of Ubuntu to the next one i.e Breezy to Dapper, Dapper to Edgy and Edgy to Feisty is:

press Alt-F2 and type:

update-manager -d

The -d switch instructs Update Manager to look for development releases. If you have a working network connection, it should then inform you about a new release and offer to upgrade your system.

What are the hardware requirements for Ubuntu Feisty?

Unlike the other operating system (i.e.windoze) Linux distributions don't need better hardware each time you upgrade your OS. If you want to run all the fancy 3d stuff you will need a good graphics card (preferably Nvidia or Intel, most ATI cards will work too) but for the normal functional desktop you don't need much at all.

If you want to install from or use the live CD you will need a minimum of 256MB of RAM. If you have less than that you should use the Alternate CD for the installation and consider Xubuntu instead of Ubuntu as Xubuntu is lighter and meant for older systems.

Ubuntu Feisty runs fine on my old P3 500MHz 256MB laptop. There are people running Linux distros on PCs much slower than that.
