In your attempt to make your Ubuntu (or nay other Gnome based desktop)
as cool as it gets you might come across gDesklets. As most things in
Linux is not all that straight forward. Have you always wondered how to
get the weather forecast widget / desklet working on your Ubuntu? Here
is how.
My gDesklets This is what we are trying to achieve. Most of it is pretty simple.
To install gdesklets go to terminal and type:
sudo aptitude install gdesklets
Now add gdesklets into your start up sessions: System - Preferences - Sessions - Startup Programs and add gdesklets.
Now start gdesklets (Alt+F2 type gdesklets)
Most of the desklets are already there for you to use and all you have to do is double click on the ones you want and they will appear on you desktop. However, the gDesklet project is not very active anymore and the weather desklet doesn't work. To get it working you need to download this desklet GoodWeather.tar 2007-04-04 02:56:53 1.39 Mb and drag it into your gDesklet manager, find it (probably in uncategorized section) and double-click to install.
Now all you have to do is set up your weather location.Go to Yahoo Weather search for your location and note the resulting html page. The name of the page is your location code (ie. London, UK page is http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/UKXX0318.html therefore the code is UKXX0318).
And thats it. Few more gDesklets to download from here (no guarantee but they work on my Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 without problem):
GnomeBar-2.0.2.tar 2007-04-04 02:56:53
Starterbar-desklet-0.31.3.tar 2007-04-04 02:56:53 90.73 Kb
XMMS.tar 2007-04-04 02:56:53 6.75 Kb
